The Annual GMHG Aggie Woodruff Invitational Golf Tournament
Thursday, July
9th, 2009
Sponsored
by First Citizens Bank
During
the 15th Century, the Kingdom of Fife on the eastern coast of Scotland originated
the game of golf as we know it today. Players would hit a small stone around a
natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive
club.
Since
golf originated in Scotland and is such a large attraction to the High Country
the GMHG felt a golf tournament was long over due. On Wednesday, July 9, 2003,
GMHG hosted the Inaugural Aggie Woodruff Golf Tournament at Mountain Glen Golf
Course.
The
day began early in the true spirit of Scottish weather. The clouds were threatening,
but it was not long before the sun decided to break through leading to a wonderful
day. The golfers arrived and assembled on the patio in anticipation of their starting
time. The grills were lit and the golfers had lunch overlooking the beautiful
golf course in the glens of the mountains. It was then time for the first group
to make their way to the tee. With kilt waving in the cool mountain air, the first
shot was taken by Mr. William B. Cocke, Jr., son of Agnes M. Woodruff, and the
GMHG Aggie Woodruff Golf Tournament was underway!
The
players wore kilts or displayed their tartan somewhere on their golf attire. The
tournament format was a two-person best ball, and prizes were also awarded for
individual low gross and low net. The event was a success due to the enthusiasm
of all involved and GHMG thanks everyone for their participation and support.
Now
it is time to do it again and you are invited! Once again a hot lunch will be
served at eleven on the patio of the Mountain Glen Golf Course in Newland and
we will tee off at noon. The format will be a two-person best ball with prizes
awarded to the best three teams (with handicap), individual low gross and individual
low net. This is a random mixed gender event playing one's usual tees. If you
and a friend wish to participate you may call the Games office to register and
pay the fee of $85.00/person (credit cards are accepted). There is no refund for
a no-show and practice balls at the range are extra.
Call
early, as there is a maximum participation of 40 players and acceptance is on
a first come, first served basis. We need your PGA handicap. Remember to wear
your kilt, but if you do not have one, be sure to display your tartan. This is
a Scottish Games Event.
For
reservations call (828) 733-1333. For online secure registration click
here. The cut off date is June 23rd.
